Most students running IB Mathematics AA HL mock exams without a structured plan make the same error: they treat authentic papers as casual practice and burn through them early. By the time it matters, the unseen simulations are gone.

This happens because authentic papers feel urgent to attempt. The instinct is to sit the paper, check the score, feel something, and move on. What gets skipped is the diagnostic step that converts a raw score into a ranked action list.

The second failure mode is subtler. Students who do try to structure their revision often chase more questions without a decision rule-cycling through drills and mocks without ever identifying which specific error patterns are actually keeping marks from moving.

This framework replaces both habits with three sequential phases. Diagnostic turns timed sections into a prioritized weakness list. Integration repairs the top gaps while building mixed-topic recognition. Simulation reserves the remaining unseen papers for full-condition pacing under real exam constraints, generating decision data rather than just experience.

Archive sequencing is built into the structure from day one. With six weeks available, reserve full-paper simulations for the final 10-14 days and spend the earlier weeks on sections and mixed sets. With 7-8 weeks, one or two full simulations earlier are workable-but hold the newest papers for the last sittings regardless. Papers already reviewed with markschemes become drill sources, not simulations.

Weeks 1-2: Diagnostic Phase

In Weeks 1-2, timed paper sections-not full mocks-are the primary tool. Algebra-heavy, non-calculator chunks from Paper 1; GDC-based applied questions from Paper 2; investigation reading and early-part setups from Paper 3. Treat each section as a diagnostic unit and log every lost mark into one of four categories: conceptual gap, procedural slip, contextual interpretation failure, or time-management breakdown.

For each logged error, record four additional fields: marks lost, topic family, whether two extra minutes would likely have resolved it (yes or no), and how many times that pattern has appeared this week. That’s your raw data. At the end of the week, assign each repeating pattern a priority score by combining total marks lost with a small repeat-count bonus, then cut the list to the top three patterns across all papers-everything else waits. Then match the remediation format to the error type: conceptual gaps get a short re-teach plus a targeted question set; procedural slips need slow, accuracy-first repetitions of the same technique followed by a timed mini-set to confirm the fix held under pressure; interpretation failures respond to deliberate written-out translations-‘what is this actually asking?’-before solving; timing breakdowns need brief timed micro-drills of 8-12 minutes with a hard stop-and-mark rule.

The trigger for moving a skill out of blocked drilling and into mixed sets is roughly 80% success in a small timed set. Once a pattern is mostly correct under light time pressure, stop isolating it and put it into unlabeled mixed sets-the format that trains recognition alongside execution rather than execution alone. Cap active high-priority targets at three when entering Week 3; anything beyond that becomes maintenance until a slot opens.

Weeks 3-5: Integration Phase

The diagnostic phase produces a list. Weeks 3-5 are where that list becomes actual mark recovery. Your top two or three patterns from Weeks 1-2 form Strand A-the narrow set of focus topics. As each Strand A target clears the 80% threshold under light time pressure, it migrates to Strand B, where it gets practiced inside mixed, unlabeled sets that force topic recognition before calculation.

Strand A is topic-filtered drilling with the explicit goal of rapid mark recovery rather than syllabus re-coverage-two things that are easy to confuse and expensive to conflate. In AA HL, this commonly means multi-step calculus applications, complex numbers and differential equations, vector geometry with extended reasoning, or probability distribution questions, when those appear in your top patterns. Keep the strand tight. Protecting time for the few issues that are actually bleeding marks is the discipline that makes the whole framework work.

Strand B is where preparation genuinely shifts register. Mixed-topic, unlabeled sets force you to identify which technique applies before doing anything else-the cognitive step that topic-blocked drilling never trains. A seventh-grade mathematics classroom study titled ‘An Efficacy Study of Interleaved Mathematics Practice’ found that students working on mixed-topic sets scored substantially higher than peers practicing the same problems in single-topic blocks, with interleaved assignments described in that report as nearly twice as effective. That result comes from a general mathematics classroom rather than IB-specific work, but it still supports using mixed-topic, unlabeled sets as a bridge between topic drills and full papers. Build sets that deliberately include recently improved patterns alongside at least one steady maintenance topic, and do not label questions by chapter.

Paper 3 requires its own habits inside this phase. Use untimed or lightly timed sessions to practice reading investigations carefully-distinguishing what is fixed from what is variable, defining symbols early, and tracking results that carry forward to later parts. At the same time, resist over-polishing early subparts. Paper 3 rewards consistent forward progress through an investigation more reliably than perfect algebra in a single line.

Final 10-14 Days: Simulation Phase

In the final 10-14 days, your newest authentic papers run as full timed simulations under conditions as close as practical to the real exam. In a strict six-week run-up, that’s typically two or three full sittings; if you started with 7-8 weeks, one additional sitting earlier in the window is reasonable-while still reserving the most recent papers for the last attempts.

After each full mock, the total score is only part of the picture. Run this four-step debrief before anything else:

  1. Log the result: record Paper 1 marks, Paper 2 marks, Paper 3 marks, plus the three biggest lost-mark causes for each paper using your error taxonomy.
  2. Set your target: using grade-boundary guidance from your school or teacher, write the total marks you are aiming for and convert that into an allowed marks-lost figure per paper by subtracting your paper target from the paper maximum.
  3. Pick the fix format: if the main limiter is conceptual or interpretation-based, redo similar questions slowly then run one short timed mini-set; if it is mostly timing, run timed micro-drills with a strict stop-and-mark.
  4. Schedule the next mock: do not book another full simulation until you have reworked every lost-mark question from the last paper and completed at least one mixed, unlabeled set that includes the top limiting pattern.

That fourth step matters most when authentic unseen papers are finite. Sitting another full mock before reworking the last one converts a scarce resource into repetition without repair. The per-paper marks show clearly where you can afford losses and where you cannot-and that determines whether the priority is conceptual repair, sharper interpretation, or pacing. Commercial prediction papers, if you use them, work well for Paper 3 exposure and additional mixed practice, but they don’t carry the same diagnostic weight as genuinely unseen material.

Week-by-Week Operational Calendar

The three phases are clear in principle. Making them work in practice means translating the structure into a calendar that defines what kind of session runs on each study day, how targets get selected week by week, and how the paper archive gets sequenced from the start.

In Weeks 1-2, run four or five timed sections per week across Papers 1, 2, and 3-logging errors the same day and applying the priority-scoring rule to identify your top two or three patterns. In Weeks 3-5, most days belong to Strand A targeted drills, with two or three sessions each week on Strand B mixed, unlabeled sets; hold the active-target cap at three throughout. In the final 10-14 days, schedule two or three full timed sittings and run the debrief protocol after each one before committing to the next. From the outset, apply the archive-sequencing rule established in the framework: newest papers are simulation-only, and any paper fully reviewed with its markscheme moves to the drill pile from that point forward.

Putting the Six-Week Mock System to Work

The win condition isn’t more mocks-it’s a system where every attempt produces a ranked target, a specific practice format, and a clearer decision about which paper to use next. Students who improve most across a six-week preparation block aren’t necessarily the ones who worked hardest; they’re the ones who converted every session into a concrete next step. Map your archive into newest, mid-age, and already-reviewed papers, run one timed section today, and start logging lost marks with the error taxonomy and the priority-scoring rule.
